Signs it Might Be Time to Get a Divorce

The decision to divorce isn’t always cut and dry. While, in some cases, divorce is the best course of action, it remains a difficult decision. Only you know what is in your heart and the best way forward for you and your family. If you’re considering divorce, the following signs may help make your decision clear.

Silence is Deadly
While constant arguing doesn’t make a healthy relationship, silence can be a sign of avoidance or even lack of interest. Arguing gives you and your spouse a way to resolve issues; however, when you find there’s no fight left, you may need to question the direction your relationship is headed.

Provocation
If you find yourself continually testing the boundaries of your relationship and provoking your spouse, consider your endgame. Are you subconsciously trying to end things but too afraid to make a move?

Hiding
It’s natural to hide parts of ourselves from others. This is a form of protection. However, your spouse should be the one person who you can truly be yourself around. If you feel the need to hide parts of who you are, your relationship cannot be fulfilling. Hiding oneself can be the result of fear from rejection or a lack of respect from your partner.

Who, or What Comes First
From kids to work, there are always outside influences that impact your relationship. It’s when an outside factor starts to take center stage leaving little or no time for your spouse, that problems can arise.

“I” vs. “We”
Marriage is a partnership. Successful relationships often require both parties to work together toward a common goal. The pronouns you use can signal how close you feel to your partner. Do you speak more frequently in terms of ‘we’ or ‘I’ and ‘me’? The language you use can signal how connected you are to your partner.

Disconnection
Your spouse should be the person you turn to in crisis or celebration. If your go-to person to share important moments with isn’t your partner, you can start to feel disconnected and lonely. This can signal trouble on the horizon.

Infidelity and Forgiveness
Infidelity can undoubtedly be a roadblock in a marriage, but not all unfaithful relationships end in divorce. The deciding factor in ending a relationship has to do with forgiveness. If you find it impossible to forgive your spouse, or you continually dredge up past issues, your marriage may struggle to survive.

Envisioning Your Exit
The second you begin planning your exit strategy, it’s a sign your marriage isn’t working. Whether you’re looking for a new job to gain financial independence or you’ve begun squirreling away money in a secret account, you may need to acknowledge that you are no longer ‘all in’ when it comes to your relationship.

While these are just a few signs that your relationship may be in trouble, only you can decide if divorce is the road ahead. If you’re experiencing any of these signs, this doesn’t mean your marriage is beyond repair. If, however, after carefully considering your options, you decide divorce is the best way forward, we’re here to help.
